Important Update from the Legal Aid Agency – 19 May 2025

On 23 April, the Legal Aid Agency (LAA) identified a cyber-attack targeting its online systems used by legal aid providers. Initial investigations suggested limited impact, but by 16 May it became clear the breach was far more extensive. The group behind the attack accessed and downloaded a large amount of sensitive personal data belonging to individuals who applied for legal aid since 2010. This may include contact details, dates of birth, national ID numbers, financial data, criminal history, and employment status. The LAA is working with the National Crime Agency, the National Cyber Security Centre, and the Information Commissioner.

The Legal Aid Agency (LAA) is urging anyone who has applied for legal aid since 2010 to take steps to protect themselves. They are advising the public to stay alert for any unusual activity, such as unexpected phone calls, messages, or emails, and to consider updating any passwords that may be at risk.

The LAA has also stressed the importance of caution when communicating online or by phone. If you're unsure about who you're speaking to, take the time to verify their identity independently before sharing any personal or sensitive information.
