Leaping lawyers come to Trevi House’s rescue

Category: News

Nash and Co. Solicitors LLP lawyers this week leaped to the rescue of Trevi house, leading local women’s charity, by paying for Trevi House to be part of the Lady Astor 100 statue campaign.

Trevi House is a women’s recovery charity based in Devon.  It runs a women’s only residential rehabilitation centre and can accommodate up to 10 women and their children at any given time – it’s the only women’s centre in the UK where women can keep their children through rehab.

At Trevi House, mums work really hard to beat their addiction for good.  They work to address the root cause of their trauma so that they can go forward in life and be the best mum they can be.  Trevi House is the only place in the UK where mums and children can stay together whilst mums go through rehab.  And because of this, almost 7 out of 10 children get to stay with their mum.

Trevi House also runs a leading community-based women’s centre; Sunflower Women’s Centre which has recently been awarded funding from the Ministry of Justice to expand its centre and work with women with criminogenic behaviours – increasing the women it supports from 60 to 200 women per annum.  Women describe the Sunflower Women’s Centre as a lifeline; helping them to move forward in their lives.

Nearly 100 years ago Nancy Astor was the first woman to take her seat in the Houses of Parliament as the UK’s first female MP. Her achievement was extraordinary and courageous and changed the world forever in terms of equality, democracy, fairness and hope.

It was the people of Plymouth who voted her in just one year after some women were finally given the vote. She served the city as MP for Plymouth Sutton for another 26 years and fought for the rights and safety of women and children, education, the people of the city, and equality throughout that time.

On 28th November 2019, 100 years to the day since she was announced the winner of the seat, a statue will be unveiled to her on Plymouth’s Hoe outside her family home on Elliot Terrace and donors will have their name to one side of the statue.

Hannah Shead, CEO of Trevi House, states: “It was really important for Trevi House to be part of the Lady Astor 100 statue campaign because our charity stands so strongly for equality and democracy in the UK.  However as a charity we simply did not have the funds to pay for this and so for Nash and Co. Solicitors to come to our rescue is an absolute dream.  A number of private donors, who also knew how important it was for Trevi to be part of the campaign, donated the first £100 and Nash and Co. Solicitors donated the rest.  I would like to say a heartfelt thank you to them all for allowing this to happen.”

The support from Nash and Co. Solicitors didn’t stop there, as 2 of their lawyers have also signed up to Trevi House’s Big Pink Sky Dive.

Helen Bull, Solicitor and Partner at Nash and Co. Solicitors LLP states: “I am delighted to be able to support Trevi House in both being part of the Lady Astor 100 statue campaign and their Big Pink Sky Dive fundraising venture.   As a lawyer who specialises in representing parents and children in care proceedings, it is wonderful to have such a unique resource on our doorstep.  Trevi offers a fantastic opportunity for mothers to be able to parent their child in a safe environment whilst taking steps to overcome their addictions.”

Hannah Shead states: “The support we have received from Nash and Co. already this year has been fantastic.  We are really grateful to them for their generosity – I will be joining them on the Big Pink Sky Dive and so I look forward to sharing a day of achievement with them too!”

Lawyers from Nash and Co. Solicitors LLP are daring other lawyers from across the city to join them in their Big Pink leap.  So far they are being joined by Carrie Laws at the Family Law Company.

The first Big Pink Sky Dive will be held on the 29th March 2019 at Dunkeswell airfield near Honiton.  By raising £395, the sky dive will be paid for.  Anyone interested should get in contact with Trevi House on [email protected] or call 01752 255758.   The next date planned is 20 September.
